MAKEUP TIPS

Here is some of what we've learned so far... We love to learn new things, and we love to share our knowledge.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Got a classic twist for lips?
Try sheer and glossy. Experiment with subtle shades and colors.

What's happening with the eyes?
Go light and shimmery for the day. Go darker for night. Try using your brushes to blend several unusual colors. See what makes your eye sparkle.

How do I highlight my cheeks?
No more grandma-clown-streetworker look. Go soft, soft, soft, and blend, blend, blend. Try choosing a few subtle shades and blend them until they are seamless.

How can I get my skin to glow?
Each person's skin is different. There are so many products and possible steps. Cleansing. Toning. Exfoliating. Moisturizing. Hydrating. Energizing. Nourishing. Email us at info@aboutfacemakeup.com and we'll arrange for a consultation. We can identify your skin's needs and help you create a system that works for you. We can also analyze your current skin routine and make suggestions.

For a quick way to get glowing skin, try mixing a loose bronzing powder with your liquid foundation. Stay sheer and shimmery with your makeup.

How do you choose a concealer? Are there different concealers?
Concealers can be tricky. We recommend you start with a color close to your own skin, slightly lighter if there isn't an exact match. Liquid and creme are two types of concealers. Creme concealers should be set with powder foundation. In general, you should apply concealer last so that it's coverage is strongest. You can apply touch-ups throughout the day.

What makes a good makeup case?
There are many ways to get a makeup case, from free gifts with the purchase of a fragrance at a department store to ordering online. You have to decide what features are important: looks, capacity, and compartments. Cute cases come from Face Stockholm in mesh and nylon with funky metallic colors. Or try Henri Bendel for the latest fashions. Figure out how much makeup you need to carry at once. Or perhaps you have different needs, like office versus party. Why not get a case for each. Once you've figured out how much makeup you need to carry, it's easy to find the right case.

What's best for sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin can mean a lot of different things. Too dry. Too oily. Burned from chemicals, fire, or the sun. After surgery. For mildly sensitive skin, avoid products with fragrances, alcohols, detergents, mineral oil, and lanolins. Avoid skin lightening products. Use sunblock.

About Face Makeup strongly recommends that you ask for sensitive-skin products from a reputable dealer. Apply a sample to your forearm and wait for 24 hours to see if there are any adverse reactions. Make sure you moisturize and protect your skin from the sun. For more serious sensitivities, contact a dermatologist who can properly diagnose and treat your skin. Remember, a doctor is your friend.

What are some ways to get rid of unwanted facial hair?
Electrolysis and laser treatments are permanent solutions. Make sure you research the person who will perform the work. Get recommendations, and check those references out. When you comparison shop, please make sure that money is not the deciding factor. You get what you pay for, and these procedures can have serious side effects.

Non-permanent solutions include waxing, tweezing, and an asian technique called "Threading." Hair-removal lotions can be very harsh and damaging to sensitive skin. We don't like them.

How do I keep my cosmetic brushes from shedding?
About Face Makeup believes in good brushes! Good tools mean good makeup application. Quality brushes should not shed. If you have purchased a good brush, and it sheds, you might be using it too roughly. Don't dab your brush, roll or brush it across the makeup. You'll see a difference.

How do I care for my brushes?
Clean your brushes! It's important for maintaining softness and avoiding contamination. Your good brushes, made from sable, squirrel, goat, and modern synthetics, need to be cleaned after every use. You'll see better performance, and your brushes will last longer. To clean them, you can use a professional brush cleaner, or you can use mild soap and water. Pat, never rub, them and hang brush-side down or lay flat to dry. If the brushes are not dried properly, water can seep into and loosen the binding for the hairs, causing the hairs to fall out.
